It’s nearly January, and as well as the Villa moving the right way up the table, we also get to enjoy Steve Bruce’s first transfer window with us.
The good Dr has already proven that he’s not shy with his money, and by and large, I think we bought pretty well in the summer under Di Matteo. With Steve Bruce in charge though, and everything that he brings, I think we could see an even higher calibre of player coming to Villa Park. Villa should always be a big draw, but with the mess we’ve found ourselves in, coupled with Lerner’s previous tightening of the purse-strings, that has not been the case.
Obviously we’re in the Championship, so a return to the big names of the MON era might be a season or two away, but for the first time in a long time, I’m excited for what lies ahead for Villa, both on and off the pitch.
As you’d expect, the links are heating up, and Robert Snodgrass is one that catches the eye. Out of contract in the summer (though Hull are reportedly trying to enforce another year), and having previously worked with Bruce, it’s one that makes sense. The fact he’d add plenty to a midfield that attracts lots of criticism is an added bonus. He’s Hull’s top scorer, can take a mean set-piece (something we’re also lacking), and adds much needed quality to our squad.
I’d be pleasantly surprised if we pulled this off, as I’m sure Hull won’t let him go easily, and you have to imagine a number of Premier League clubs would want him. Still, we have the Bruce link, and even if it is just a link to Snodgrass, it’s a step in the right direction.
Here’s a selection of tweets from Villa fans on the subject.
Snodgrass is up for grabs for a rumoured 4m I'd give that a bloody good go. #avfc
