The plan was to sit down and write a piece collecting fans thoughts on Joe Bennett leaving for Cardiff, which our owner tweeted earlier today, but with Villa being Villa, it’s never that simple!
In the last hour or so, Bennett has tweeted a not so subtle dig at Dr Tony Xia, sparking a backlash from fans, and a swift response from the owner. It’s been a very interesting few weeks for the player, who impressed many pre-season, and the move to Sheffield Wednesday falling through was seen as a positive by many. More information has come out since, with the general consensus being that Villa and Xia didn’t want to lose Bennett on a free, as well as having to pay some of his wages.
With a move to Cardiff nearing completion, Bennett has had his say on the matter, and here is what he had to say:
Can you get anymore disrespectful tweeting about a players career like somebody has the last week
— Joe Bennett (@JoeBennett27) August 26, 2016
Our owner was quick to respond (essentially saying he’s doing the player a favour, and talking about how it was the best decision for the club), but deleted his tweets soon after while I was writing this. Here is his latest:
Joe just sent a message explaining and apologizing that he meant to some fans annoyed him not me&club. Let's move on and best wishes to him!

All in all, it’s a pretty ugly end to what has been a disappointing spell at Villa. I’ve always thought he’d be better used further up the field, and he might excel in Cardiff and their wing-back system. He has many detractors, but Cissokho has started the season as part of a defence that has looked solid mostly, and of course we have the exciting Amavi on the books. As you can imagine, fans were quick to respond to Bennett. Here’s a selection that were safe to publish (If any Villa fans object to seeing their tweets in the piece, let us know, and we can remove):
@JoeBennett27 Please don't disrespect Villa though, you've been very well paid for very little return whilst you've all watched the club rot

@JoeBennett27 Like you respectfully expected Villa to pay you for playing for someone else

@JoeBennett27 and he wasn't being disrespectful. Was explaining the situation to the fans. You know, the people who give you your lifestyle
